Antonio and Ward consider why we have an insatiable appetite for viewing more and more new images. What are we trying to fill in in our lives by constantly looking at new images? Do we risk losing ourselves amongst all the images we seek on a daily basis?

Bigger Than You

On this first episode of the New Year, Antonio and Ward ponder the statement that your photographs are not only about you. The idea that somehow the work we create is not only for our self enjoyment or artistic purposes but also serve something larger. Photographs preserve the world in which we inhabit and leave a mark on the world, but what does that mark mean?

Lartigue Redux
Monday Nov 29, 2021
Monday Nov 29, 2021
Due to all the tumult of Thanksgiving and work, Antonio and Ward are taking a small break and presenting this rerun of their popular episode called "Lost in Lartigue." Here are the show notes from the original 2019 broadcast:
In this episode, I'm joined by my buddy Ward Rosin and we do a deep dive into the photographer Jacques-Henri Lartigue.
Ward and I touch on many aspects of Lartigue's work including his love of speed and his use of one of the first color photography processes called "Autochrome." We make some interesting discoveries during our chat and I'm sure you will too as you listen to us both talk about a photographer we've admired for a long time.
This is the first of what will be a regular feature on Street Shots. The idea of talking about interesting and exceptional photographers with a buddy has been something I've wanted to do on the show for a while now. Any feedback is appreciated.

Antonio and Ward speak with North Dakotan photographer/ambrotypist Shane Balkowitsch. In 2012, Shane started his photographic journey using the almost forgotten technique known as the "Wet Plate Collodion" process. This 1851 process which applies pure silver onto glass or tin, wet plate collodion photography is an arduous technique requiring patience and skill resulting in a unique, one-of-a-kind archival image. Because exposures often exceed ten seconds, Shane describes the images he captures as "moving stills." The Street Shots guys talk to Shane not so much about the "how" of the wet plate process but more of the "why" of wet plates. They also dive into his many projects and his cultivation of a creative community surrounding his purpose-built daylight studio on the plains of North Dakota. This is surely a conversation for the ages.
In Ancient Greek, the word Ambrotype is translated as "Immortal Impression."

Stephen Shore said in a YouTube video that he wants to take photos that "feel like seeing, just the way when people write they use a different language than they use when they speak." Antonio and Ward invited their fellow Unusual Collective brother-in-light, David Szweduik to riff off of Shore's statement and see how it relates to their work and photography in general.

In this episode, Antonio and Ward had the privilege of interviewing Brazilian-born photographer, Sandra Cattaneo Adorno. Sandra began photography career eight years ago when her daughter enrolled her in Alex and Rebecca Webb's street photo workshop in Barcelona for her 60th birthday. Since then, she has traveled the world photographing people in her own unique way. Last year, Radius Books published Sandra's second photo book, "Águas De Ouro," (which translates to "Waters of Gold.") which in itself is a work of art. The Street Shots guys talk to Sandra about her book and what it's like to be a creative and successful midlife photographer.

I'm joined by Ward Rosin on this episode as we dive into Fred Herzog's "Modern Color" book. Not a review, per se, but more of an appreciation. Herzog is one of those "colorist" street photographers from the late 50s and 60s, photographing mainly in the city of Vancouver, Canada. Ward and I skim through some of the more thought provoking images in the book as well as discuss the controversy of a 2012 interview with Herzog. Also, stay tuned until the end where I make a much anticipated announcement.

"Computer, Enhance!" A Chat with Bryan Minear
Thursday Dec 31, 2020
Thursday Dec 31, 2020
This last episode of 2020 (and my 3rd of December!) I chat with my friend Bryan Minear about processing. I was inspired to talk with Bryan after he posted a video he made of himself processing images in Capture One. I wanted to discuss this question that popped into my head: Has processing given us a solution for a problem that wasn’t there? While we don't fully answer this, I believe this is a beginning of a longer discussion about processing our photographs using apps like Capture One and the new artificial intelligence features of apps like Photoshop and Luminar AI. Processing is integral for many photographers (Bryan and myself included) whose visual voice is completed when they take their images into the digital darkroom, but is it possible to lose control over our creativity?
